The optic nerve👉 (also known as Cranial Nerve II or CN II) is extra special among the cranial nerves because of how it forms. It’s the only cranial nerve that’s also part of your central nervous system (CNS), along with your brain and spinal cord. The other 11 cranial nerves are part of your peripheral nervous system (PNS).
➡️it is technically a myelinated tract of the central nervous system, rather than a classical nerve of the peripheral nervous system because it is derived from an out-pouching of the diencephalon (optic stalks) during embryonic development. As a consequence, the fibers of the optic nerve are covered with myelin produced by oligodendrocytes, rather than Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system, and are encased within the meninges.
